The project Sun at school is also realized in a rural zone of the West region of Cameroon: Dschang, to make understand the importance of the environmental protection and to popularize the renewable energies in a zone which is not still a part of the network of the only supplier of electrical energy in our country.

It is question for the animators of the project to introduce the notions of environment, renewable energies as well as the various types of energies. Practical sessions allow showing how it is possible to obtain thanks to the sun the electrical energy for daily uses. These sessions consist in presenting photovoltaic patches, in explaining the process allowing to obtain energy and to make a demonstration of construction of home using solar energy. We also make a presentation on the use of a renewable energy (the solar energy) for water treatment (pasteurization).

Not only the children and the teachers are so built on these notions, but also we present to the pupils of the classes of secondary education, the opportunities of studies in the domains of environment and renewable energies so that they can choose it as their academic orientation.

The project Sun at school which joins the environmental educational program in the secondary school implemented by Fondation Kana consists in carrying out courses to the pupils in the form of workshops quite as in the schools of primary education. With this difference that here the developed themes are even more supported because the school level is the one of pupils from first years of high school to upper sixth class of the general education and those of the technical education who are more capable of understanding the environmental aspects. For the secondary school, we mostly resort to "PowerPoint” displays made by the animators, as well as to videos. Quiz and homework allow estimating the degree of implication and understanding of the inculcated notions.

To sharpen the interest of pupils for the problem of environmental protection and renewable energies, practical sessions are operated following presentations to show how we can obtain light thanks to photovoltaic patches. To stay in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and insure the sustainability of the project, the main target remains the young people, who later can facilitate the application of new laws and favor the expansion of the photovoltaic. It is an opportunity for all the concerned to learn and to inquire better on forms of energy.

Through transfer of the theoretical knowledge in schools, this project will contribute to cover the big deficit in information and especially to allow the young people to grow with a positive vision of the environmental protection, the solar energy and the new forms of energy.

Results expected from the project:

  • To impregnate children with the notion of environment and the importance of its protection;
  • The appropriation of the project by the teaching and educational profession;
  • To introduce the learners to the notion of solar energy and its various advantages, through the photovoltaic, to incite to favor its expansion.

The project Sun at school in schools of primary education consists in giving in the form of workshops, interactive courses to the pupils to draw their attentions on the problem of the environmental protection and the behavior favorable to energy resources. The solar energy proposes as a very interesting means to affect the pupils of the primary level, and give them a good impression of the matter.

The pupils being 5 years old to 11 years old only, the used methodology is to resort to posters, picture books, photos and cartoons which the reference themes are generally environmental protection and renewable energies. However the accent is put on the environment.

To stay in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and insure the sustainability of the project, the young people are the main target because they can later facilitate the application of new laws and favor the expansion of the photovoltaic.

Through the transfer of the theoretical knowledge in schools, this project will contribute to cover the big deficit in information and especially to allow the young people to grow with a positive vision of the environmental protection, the solar energy and the new forms of energy. The strategy to be adopted will consist in introducing stage by stage, from the basic education, the training and the post-trainings. The courses are dispensed in the form of workshops and of interactive exchanges with pupils.

For example, for the primary school we begin on the theme of environment and continue with its protection. Then a practical phase allows demonstrating the theoretical aspects evoked during the interactive sessions.

It is to note that the project passed by an experimental phase led with three schools to estimate its possibilities and measure its impact.

Results expected from the project:

  • To impregnate children with the notion of environment and the importance of its protection;
  • The appropriation of the project by the teaching and educational profession.
